Blinded… Blinded…

The word swirled through Beowulf’s mind, each time threatening to overwhelm his senses. Before him, hollowed out sockets stared back, the bloodied pits and knife cuts abominations scarring faces he loved. A thunderous roar, and the boat rolled on its beam-ends as dozens of booted feet hit the deck. Beowulf turned his head, his spirits lifting when he saw that the boots belonged to Ongentheow’s guard. The king had been good to his word, despatching a strong column to back him up as he chased the captives down. Kormak led the Swedes, and the king’s man threw Beowulf a grin as he came across. Seeing Æthelhild the man dipped his head, and the joy of their reunion rang in their voices as hearth guard and queen exchanged heartfelt greetings. With his duty discharged, Kormak turned to Beowulf. “Congratulations,” he said, “on your swift and overwhelming victory.”

Beowulf attempted to smile in return, but felt his face contort as he did so. The sourness was back, stronger this time, and as his mind began to swim he became aware of a tingling in his arms and legs. “I have to get away,” he managed to blurt, as a darkening sky began to spin, “find me a place to rest.”

Even as he spoke them, Beowulf was aware that the words were shredding like smoke on the wind, and as an inky blackness closed in, he began to fall.
